Trip to STL

We recently had the opportunity to visit my brother in STL for the weekend. He's finishing up chiropractor school there in December! We can't wait to have him back closer to home! But it has been nice having a place to stay in STL while we enjoy all of the things the city has to offer! :) Each year during the fall we usually try to plan a trip there and hit up the zoo. This year, he suggested we forgo the zoo and try out Grant's Farm. We were SO glad we did! It was something new that we'd never done before and was so worth it. The fall scenery was beautiful; the leaves were changing, there were animals to see, a tram ride, a visit to the Clydesdale stables, perfect places for fall pictures, etc. They even had their Halloween decor up which the boys seemed to enjoy more than the animals! Ha.

Ready to go inside Grant's Farm

Waiting at the Clydesdale Stables.

Stopping to pose for pics.

At Grant's Farm.

Tram ride. BRRRRR! It was CHILLY!!

Pretty fall scenery.

While in STL we also took in the Magic House. This place was incredible!!! Totally devoted to kids. Imagine a place where everything is kid friendly and made to be handled by children-around 50,000 square feet full of toys, displays, playhouses etc! For all you parents, imagine taking your kids to a place where you didn't have to say every 2 minutes, "Don't touch that! Don't mess with this! Stay away from that!" I think not only being child bliss it was also parental bliss as well! Ha. If you're interested you can read about more information here.

Climbing up the three story beanstalk.

Checking out at the grocery store.

Playing with magnets.

Checking out books at the Library.

Playing at the water-works table.

Playing with light switches--this was Rhett's favorite.

Playing in the construction area.

In the court room--under pressure. :)

Addressing the nation.

Making the big decisions.

Funniest picture from the whole trip--hands down! :)

We also did a trip to the Arch. The boys had never been close up to the Arch and we wanted them to experience that as well. They absolutely LOVED it. They got to ride to the top (while Rhett and I hung out by the river and waited for them) and got the see the bird's eye view of ST. Louis. How fun!

In the pod to go up in the Arch.

At the top.

Hanging out at the river, waiting on our boys to come back down.

To get a picture like this...

...one must do this! Ha. :)

My wonderful hubby!

Thanks J! Thanks so much for putting us up for the weekend and letting us drag you all over the city with us! :)

Smile

I heard a song recently and just can't get it out of my head. I usually hate when that happens but this time it's such a happy song that I really don't mind it. I have no idea how old the song is and until today wasn't 100% sure that Uncle Kracker sang it (although I was pretty sure). The song is called "Smile".

I typically do not download music. Brandon can tell you that. He knows if I ever download a song I must REALLY like it. I typically stick to my regular old playlist with the same old songs on my iPod. But today I found this one on iTunes, downloaded it and Googled the lyrics. Again, I just love it. I love the feeling he describes in the song. The "just make your heart burst with love" feelings. I hope everyone has a chance to feel that. I know I feel it. Every time I hear that song I'm made to stop and think about one of my richest blessings in life--Brandon. I can't listen to that song and not think about him and our mostly fun, crazy, joy-filled lives. In case you aren't familiar with the song here are some of the lyrics (you can Google the rest if interested. I promise the rest are just as good):

"You make me smile like the sun
Fall out of bed, sing like a bird
Dizzy in my head, spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold, buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Ohh, you make me smile"

I can't imagine a life without these feelings or, most importantly, without the person who brings to life these feelings. I want to do better tomorrow than I did today making him feel the same way I do when I hear this song. I feel sure that without him this would be just another ordinary song. But because of him, this song is about our life. =)

Perhaps this song is not as powerful without the happy, catchy little tune but it gets me every time. And yes, every time I hear that song I...SMILE! =)

A day on the Hill!

Last Saturday was beautiful, perfect, fall football weather. No better way to spend it than on the Hill of Good Ol' Rocky Top! We had such a great time. We won't really say much about the game itself--not much to say until we get a decent quarter back who knows home jerseys from opponents' jerseys. :( Still, SUCH a wonderful day. There truly is nothing like getting out amongst 100,000 other dyed in the wool Vol fans. It's an atmosphere you can't even fully describe but makes the heart swell and long to go back to once you've been a part of it. Even my KY husband dressed in orange for the occasion and rooted the for the Vols. I must say I'm making progress with him. :)

See! Told you he looked good in ORANGE. GooooooooVols!!!!

Definition of Dating (according to a 6 year old):

I overheard Lawson talking to Jagger and they were talking about (of all things) dating! I heard Jagger ask Lawson, "What is dating, anyway?" Here is his definition:

"When a boy thinks a girl is very pretty and the girl thinks the boy is very handsome and they like each other enough to go eat food together."

Pretty simplistic, but still, pretty accurate! :)

Just wanted to share. Happy Thursday, everyone!

Whew!!!

Well...I'm not sure where to start. Man! I am a TERRIBLE blogger, huh? I promise I try to find time but what I've found lately is that even when I do find the time I lack the energy! When I'm finally "done" (and I use that word VERY loosely!) with my daily everyday things, all I want to do is crash on the couch. I haven't even done that lately though. When I'm "done" for the day I have, as of late, been working on things for my 2-year-old Bible class.

I'm thinking I'm going to LOVE my class this quarter! I have a super cute group of kids; lots of kids. :) About 9 or 10 in all when everyone is there. Did you catch that? 9-10 2-year-olds? I'm I crazy? :) I'm teaching on Genesis and have had some good ideas for a few of the lessons but be warned! I may come to my blogger friends for ideas from time to time!

Now, I know what most of you really want are updates on the kids (no one cares much about our boring "grown-up" lives. Ha). So, I'll start with Lawson. Lawson loves Kindergarten. I am beyond thrilled. It was so hard to leave my baby there wondering how he was going to get through the day without me or his dad or his Nana. What do you know? He did just fine. :) (And I did, too) He has come home on green every day (green is good by the way) and is beginning to read a little. He doesn't really like to read, but will read when I ask him to. For the first few days when I picked him up from school I'd ask how his day was and he'd reply, "It was the BEST DAY EVER!" One day I said, "That's what you said yesterday. How can it be the BEST day again?" His reply was, "I KNOW MOM!!! It just gets better and better every day!"
Me and Lawson on our way to school!

Lawson and his teacher, Mrs. Michelle.

His BFF is in his class! These two have been together thick and thin!

My Kindergartner!

He's made several new friends and just yesterday informed me that he was having his friends over this weekend. I said, "Oh, really? What day?" He told me, "Saturday of course!" He then proceeded to tell me that I was to arrange a parade on that day. A what? My dad got on the phone with me and said that Lawson wanted a parade planned for that day and when asked why a parade Lawson said he wanted his friends to feel special. Dad asked him what he thought he would need for a parade and he said we would only need some people to walk and play instruments. Then a lightbulb moment: he proudly told Grandaddy that HE could play in his parade. He asked Grandaddy what instrument he would like to play and when my dad answered a piano Lawson thought for a second realizing he could not walk and play one of those and said, "Hmmm, how 'bout you just play a trombone?" Ha. Oh, my Lawson. I just love him! :)

Jagger is adjusting to pre-school twice a week and loves it, too. His teachers love him! But honestly, who wouldn't? Ha. He's learning how to write since he already knows colors, letters, numbers, etc. Jagger has developed a new love of the X-Box. He's getting good too! He and Lawson would play for hours if we'd let them, I think. Over Labor Day weekend we travelled to KY to visit Brandon's parents and the boys got to fish. Jagger was the NATURAL fisherman. Every line he cast out in the water resulted in a bite only minutes after being in the water!

Jagger on his first day of pre-school!

Jagger and his big catch! :)

Lawson and his big catch! :)

My two biggies love to go on Security rounds with Grandaddy. Recently Grandaddy had them Security shirts made. They look adorable. Now they can be "official" when they go out with him. ;) One of the ladies that works here on campus commented to me recently that she hears lots of talk about the Security helpers and how cute they are. :) I have to mention though one thing that I think is so neat though. When my dad takes them out with him one of their duties is to lock up Loyd Auditorium (where they have chapel on campus every day). Before they lock everything up, he takes them up on the stage and they stand there in front of that big empty "audience" and sing one Bible song and lead a prayer. I'm glad they are getting "practice" on how to serve God and I'm so grateful to my dad for doing this for them.

"Security Boys"--serving and protecting (and bringing smiles!) :)

The baby: he is a little bundle of joy these days. Such a momma's boy and I'm loving it. He has quite the little personality and is beginning to be able to communicate with us; still through us interpreting grunts and finger points, but still--you have to start somewhere, right? ;) He's all over the place and now imitates his big brothers. He thinks they hung the moon. He has a couple of words now: dog, ball, hello, dad, good. When I come home from work I usually ask him if he's been a good boy and he always shakes his head up and down to indicate yes (whether he's really been good or not! Ha) He's gotten in two more teeth at the bottom and I think is working on a molar or two. I can't believe how fast my time with my babies is going by.

My sweet, sweet baby!

One "rowdy little vol"! :)

Work is beginning to settle down a little now after the start of another school year. I'm finally able to breathe and yesterday made great progress in getting a little more organized after weeks of not being able to find anything! I'm still trying to find the perfect balance between being a good wife, mother and worker. Don't know that I'll ever perfect it but I do know that I'll keep trying.

Brandon and I are hooked on the TV show "24". We can't get enough. We spend most of our weekend nights curled up on the couch glued to that show! We have season 1-6 and are now on season 5. Depending on the episode, sometimes we can stay up until the wee hours of the night watching "just one more episode" because of the way they leave you hanging. I'm not sure how you people that watch during the regular season do it! I mean, watching only one episode and waiting a week to see what happens next???

Anyway, hope this post finds everyone doing well! Enjoy a few pictures from the last few weeks!

"Gone fishin'!"

Serious concentration!

The boys LOVED fishing with their Pappy!

My Big One Year Old!

Happy birthday Rhett! We are so blessed because you have completed our family!

We actually celebrated Rhett's birthday on Sunday so all the family could be there. As an added bonus, even Uncle J got to come! It was such a fun party. This being my third time to witness one of my babies turning a year old and I don't think I've EVER seen a child enjoy cake like Rhett did! When he finished off his cupcake he began leaning over and licking the icing and crumbs off of the tray! It was hilarious.

As a big one year old here are a few things about Mr. Rhett:
Of course he's been walking since he was 10 months old.
He follows his big brothers around and thinks he's as big as they are. ;)
He's cuddly!
He waves bye, bye.
He understands simple orders like "go get your blankie", "where's your paci?" "let's go to bed", "time to take a bath". Funny that something as simple as "no" hasn't been picked up yet... hmmmmmm... ;)
He sleeps from 8:30 at night until 6:30 or 7:00 each morning.
He still nurses first thing in the morning and right before bed. Not sure which of us will miss that more!
He wears size 5 diapers and 18 mo. clothes (in most things).
He loves cereals and fruits (baby food).
He loves spaghetti (grown up food) and chocolate!
He likes to look at books.
He likes to go bye bye but doesn't like to be strapped in the car seat.
He still takes two naps in the day, short one in the morning and longer one in the afternoon.
He loves to be a "hip baby" and I end up carrying him around the house with blankie and paci in tow! :)

I feel so blessed to be the mommy of these amazing little boys. Today I'm so thankful that Rhett was brought in to our lives. Happy birthday and I love you so much sweet boy!

The BIG day

Tomorrow is it. The day I send my baby off to Kindergarten. Well, not technically I guess, since he'll be coming back home with me and I don't actually leave him there tomorrow. Still, tomorrow is the first official day. This is the day that I've dreaded since Lawson turned one and I realized that, in fact, babies do grow up.

Lawson couldn't be happier. He really is excited about going. I'm so thankful for that. Since the end of pre-school last year he's been pointing to the elementary school building each time we drive by reminding us that that is where he'll be going soon. As if I needed a reminder...

Lawson should have a good year. Everyone tells me he has an EXCELLENT teacher (I just can't officially voice an opinion as I have not known her for longer than the 20 minutes we were with her at Kindergarten orientation--although she seems like a wonderful person). He is in a classroom with several friends he already knows or attends bible class with.

So why am I sad? **Just want to insert here that Lawson does not know that I'm sad. I've been very careful to keep those emotions hidden from him. I don't want a wonderful experience for him to be tainted or skewed by my personal feelings.** But, back to the question at hand, why am I sad? Why be sad when he's so happy? Is it that I don't like him growing up? I do want him to learn and grow and thrive...Is it that I'm sad that I'm growing up (dare I say **old**)? Maybe a little. But more than that I think that it's more that I feel like I haven't had enough time with him. Or like I just blinked or turned my head for one second only to look back around and find him running from diapers straight to elementary school. I think in ways no matter how much time we get with our kids, on some levels, it will never be enough.

But am I dwelling in self-pity? A little. Yes. Ok. Enough. Tomorrow is an exciting occasion. Tomorrow I get to send him off to school to be a bright spot in someone else's day. I've been selfish with those enough. Time to share him. Time to let others see what a blessing he is. Time for him to shine and make new friends. Time for him to grow and learn and thrive even more. That's it. I'm DONE with my pity party. I want to be excited WITH him and not DESPITE him. I've made up my mind! Could someone please convince my heart? :\
